A new tourist attraction, the Kaurna Cultural Trail, an initiative of Tauondi College and the City of Port Adelaide and Enfield Visitor Information Centre, is set to educate locals and tourists alike, about the indigenous cultural meaning and the surroundings of Port Adelaide.

Along the Port River and the Ethelton Mangroves you can find six interpretive signs developed by the college and local Kaurna people. (Kaurna is pronounced Garna). Within the signs, elders explain the significance of the area to the original inhabitants.

With industrial development along the Port River destroying a lot of the natural landscape, it is now imperative to give people the opportunity to understand the land before this invasion.

The Kaurna Cultural Heritage walk, gives tourists an opportunity to see one of the world’s most ancient, continuous cultures while a member of the Tauondi College highlights the rich environmental and historical importance of the land.

“The college has a constantly growing relationship with the Council and this is another significant local initiative that has taken a lot of commitment from the council administration," Pat Waria-Read, the co-ordinator of the tourism course and senior cultural lecturer for the Tauondi College said.

"This is a great opportunity to enhance knowledge and pride about the local Aboriginal culture and history, and build a stronger relationship among the wider community.”

Guided tours will be held on the first Sunday of each month between September and April starting at 10.30am. They leave from the Rotunda, Old Port Canal Reserve, Port Adelaide.

Tours must be booked before the Wednesday previous to departure. Tours cost $10 for adults and $7 for concession holders. Tours cater for four to 12 people. For more information phone 8405 6560.
