The Clare Valley
A magical region of beautiful wineries, heritage listed towns and stunning scenery. Located just north of Adelaide, visitors can reach the centre of the region in one and a half hours.
Winemaking heritage
Winemaking is a well-established industry in the Clare Valley with its wine heritage dating back almost 160 years. The first vines were planted in 1842 by James Green. Early Jesuit settlers founded the Sevenhill Cellars in the mid-nineteenth century and Sevenhill remains one of the most popular wineries in the region. At Sevenhill, you can taste wine in the monastery’s cellars and also explore the beautiful church.
There are more than 30 cellar doors in the Clare Valley that are within a 15 minute drive of each other, so it is easy to guide yourself on an extensive wine tour.
A fantastic way to explore this region is to follow the 'Riesling Trail'. This 27 km path is aptly named after the riesling grape, the variety that the region is best known for with many vintages winning top awards year after year. The trail links cellar doors with the picturesque townships and takes walkers and riders through some lovely, peaceful countryside.
Historic towns & attractions
Several heritage-listed towns are situated within the Clare Valley and offer visitors an abundance of historic stone buildings to explore. Many remnants of the region's copper mining and farming past also remain for sightseers to view. Make sure you visit Burra, one of the world's best-preserved colonial mining communities. There are a myriad of accommodation options available to visitors. Stay in a historic miner’s cottage, a beautiful bed and breakfast or at a working sheep station.
There are many fantastic antique shops, museums and art galleries in the Clare Valley, especially in Tarlee, Mintaro and Burra.
