Flinders Ranges and the Outback

There is much history to discover in the ancient lands of the Flinders Ranges and the Outback. The vast region extends from the southern Flinders near Melrose to Innamincka, which lies 1,100kms north of Adelaide. The landscape of the Outback covers about 75 percent of South Australia and the region borders Queensland, Western Australia, New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

Inland adventures

The Flinders and Outback is perfect country for a four-wheel drive adventure, especially between the months of April and November when the weather is mild. The Birdsville Track follows the famous outback mail run and heads north from Marree to the Northern Territory border. The world's largest parallel sand dune desert, the Simpson Desert, also provides stunning four wheel driving. The Oodnadatta and Strzelecki Tracks are also very popular with four-wheel drive enthusiasts.

Camping in the Flinders Ranges and the Outback is a great way to get back to nature. The crystal clear cool nights of spring provide ideal conditions to sit around a campfire and gaze up at a sky full of stars. There are also many opportunities for cycling and bushwalking in the region. Some of the best places for a stroll include Mount Remarkable National Park, The Flinders Ranges National Park, Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary (also renowned for its Ridgetop Tour) and Rawnsley Park.

Unique experiences

Scenic flights are a great way to take in the expansive scenery of the regions, especially Wilpena Pound. You can fully appreciate the size and scale of this landmark from the air.

In the Outback, opal mining towns of Coober Pedy and Andamooka are a must see as many people live underground to avoid the heat of the sun. Visitors can enjoy this experience at underground hotels. Also in outback South Australia you will find Anna Creek Station, one of the world's largest cattle properties.
