The Murraylands
The Murraylands region stretches along the mighty Murray River from Swan Reach to Wellington. Here the Murray meanders past steep sandstone cliffs, giant red gums, wetlands and vast mallee country.
The Murray River offers a huge range of fantastic leisure and sporting opportunities. The houseboat industry thrives in this region and there is a wide range of companies that hire out various types of boats. Relax in style on a 12-berth luxury houseboat with the lot or for a more budget-conscious alternative, meander the Murray in a two-berth vessel.
Life on the river
Canoes can also be hired and are a great way to explore the river’s wetlands. The more active can hire a speed boat, skis, kneeboards or jet skis from various operators and let loose on the wide expanse of water.
Drop a fishing line in the river for your chance to catch fish or take some nets and try your luck at catching some yabbies.
Learn about the Murray River paddle steamers and their place in the region's history. Visitors can take a cruise on these historic vessels and there are also eco-bird watching river cruises available.
History
There is more to the Murraylands than just the river however. Other attractions include wildlife sanctuaries, pioneer villages and amusement parks. There's a rich history to be discovered with numerous museums and community centres.
The relaxed pace of life in the Murraylands supports laid back afternoons on the riverbank. There are plenty of spots to enjoy a picnic along the river and if you don't have time to pack your own, you can stock up on tasty produce from the region's bakeries and roadside stalls.
Exploring the old growth mallee parks is a way of leaving the 'beaten track'. This unique environment includes a system of about a dozen conservation parks. Four-wheel drives are recommended, however some parks offer options for conventional cars. Dusk and dawn are the best times to watch birds, kangaroos, emus and the rare mallee fowl. Visitors can also view animals at the various wildlife and zoological sanctuaries in the region.
