The Riverland
A vacation in the Riverland is a vacation in the sunshine. The sun-drenched Riverland region is a two hour drive northeast of Adelaide. The area takes in a 300 km stretch of the Murray River, following it from Blanchetown to the Victorian border.
Long periods of sunlight ripen stone fruit, citrus, grapes and nuts. Consequently, the Riverland sustains a substantial dried fruit industry and provides many factory outlets for sightseers to visit. More than 90 percent of the state's citrus, stone fruit and nuts are grown in the region.
River sports
The river makes a wonderful venue for exciting sports like water skiing, knee boarding and wakeboarding. Alternatively, visitors can explore the Murray at a gentler pace with house boating, canoeing and catamaran sailing. Canoes offer the perfect vessel for exploring the many secluded creeks and billabongs that make up the river system.
Sunshine also attracts many golfers, who set out to improve their handicaps at one of five first-rate golf courses located in the region. You will find courses at Waikerie, Barmera, Berri, Loxton and Renmark.
Spectacular scenery
The Riverland is an area of great natural beauty. Holidaymakers can get up close and personal with the abundant native wildlife, impressive limestone cliffs, and majestic red gum trees. The Riverland is leading the way in eco-tourism and one of the largest supporters is the Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre. The centre receives around 100,000 visitors each year and it has a fantastic boardwalk trail and winery on site.
Bird watching in the Riverland is a constantly rewarding pastime. The Gluepot Reserve is particularly significant for bird watching, providing a safe habitat for many endangered species such as the red-lored whistler and the mallee fowl.
